CONTEMPORARY ART FAIRS AND BIENNIALS 2007

We may be entering the depths of summer when art pickings are slim, but most art-lovers can’t help but peer into the future. Herewith, a brief survey of the top contemporary and modern art fairs and international festivals coming up in the second half of 2007.
JULY
Art Santa Fe
July 12-15, 2007
45 galleries and 11 'project spaces' touch down at Santa Fe’s El Museo de Cultural for a biannual art fair described as 'big enough to be interesting, small enough to be intimate and digestible.'
El Museo’s Bienal: The (S) Files
July 25, 2007-Jan. 6, 2008
A selection of 51 Latino artists from the Greater New York area at New York’s El Museo del Barrio, curated by Elvis Fuentes and E. Carmen Ramos, plus a special section dedicated to artists from Ecuador organized by Rodolfo Kronfle Chambers.
Salzburg World Fine Art Fair
July 27-Aug. 4, 2007
Coinciding with the Salzburg Summer Music Festival, this show presents ca. 50 galleries in the Baroque palace of the 'Residenz' in Salzburg.
Scope Hamptons
July 27-29, 2007
The third time around for this yearly fair in the tony Long Island community features 60 galleries from more than 20 countries at the 20,000-square-foot East Hampton Studios in the woods of Easthampton (at least a mile from the beach). Among the new features this year is 'Kids Scope,' a program of art-making workshops presented by Socrates Sculpture Park.

6th Mercosur Biennial

This year’s installment of the South American biennial, held in the wealthy Brazilian city of Porto Alegre (nicknamed the Ga?cho Capital), is titled 'The Third Bank of the River' and overseen by curator Gabriel P?rez-Barreiro. Among the scheduled highlights is 'Free Zone,' a series of projects curated by In?s Katzenstein, Luis Enrique Perez Oramas and Moacir dos Anjos; 'Three Frontiers,' an artists’ residency program; and solo exhibitions highlighting work by three important Latin-American contemporary artists: ?yvind Fahlstr?m, Jorge Macchi and Francisco Matto.

The first major effort to bring the booming contemporary art market to China, this closely watched art fair -- Chinese contemporary art sells internationally, but is anyone in China actually collecting the stuff? -- is overseen by Swiss dealer Pierre Huber, directed by Lorenzo Rudolf and organized by BolognaFiere spa. More than 120 galleries have signed up, ranging from Juana Aizpuru (Madrid) and Arndt & Partner (Berlin) to Anne de Villepoix (Paris) and Walsh (Chicago). The fair takes place at the Shanghai Exhibition Center.
10th Istanbul Biennial

Organized by San Francisco Art Institute curator Hou Hanru, the 10th Istanbul Biennial emphasizes 'artistic production based on collective intelligence and the living process of negotiating with physical sites' at four locations: the Atat?rk Cultural Center, the Istanbul Textile Traders' Market, several old customs warehouses located on the Bosporus (used also in previous installations) and the Santralistanbul contemporary art museum, located in a converted power plant.
1st Athens Biennial
Sept. 10-Nov. 18, 2007
Under the title 'Destroy Athens,' the city’s new biennial invites artists to 'attack stereotyping.' Located at the 30-acre Technopolis complex, the event is organized by the team of Xenia Kalpaktsoglou, Poka-Yio and Augustine Zenakos.
20/21 British Art Fair

56 U.K. dealers come to the Royal College of Art for the 20th anniversary edition of this fair, spanning the British modern and contemporary world from Francis Bacon to Tracey Emin.
Affair @ The Jupiter Hotel

The fourth annual installation of the pioneering Portland (Ore.) art fair, organized by Stuart Horodner and Laurel Gitlen, brings 37 U.S. galleries to the city’s Jupiter Hotel. Among the special attractions: a performance by Devendra Banhardt, sponsored by the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center.
9th Lyon Biennial

Working from an artistic concept cooked up by St?phanie Moisdon and Hans Ulrich Obrist, artistic director Thierry Raspail brings art that explores 'a history of a decade that has not yet been named [the ‘00s]' to diverse venues around Lyon.
Art Cologne Palma De Mallorca

The Art Cologne brand expands for the first-ever Art Cologne Palma de Mallorca, luring 55 galleries from 14 countries to the Spanish island in the Mediterranean so beloved of hip tourists. The fair goes on view at the 8,000-square-meter space of Terminal A at the Palma de Mallorca airport.

Taking place at the National Agricultural Exhibition Center (New Hall) in Beijing under the directorship of Dong Mengyang, Art Beijing 2007 promises 'Chinese contemporary art as core.' The website boasts of quality lighting, ATMs on site and a special thematic exhibition titled 'Art Un-Forbidden.'
ArtForum Berlin

Organized by Messe Berlin GmbH in cooperation with an international art gallery advisory board, the 12th ArtForum Berlin brings over 120 galleries from more than 25 countries to the Berlin exhibition grounds. The new brand design from Gerwald Rockenschaub and Alexander Rendi incorporates bright pink brushtrokes.

The seventh time around for Art Singapore has the fair filling Hall 404 of Suntec Singapore, with 28 galleries from Singapore itself, 55 from Asia and Oceana -- plus Italy’s CarloLivi 115 Gallery, Switzerland’s Galerie Kashya Hildebrand and Robinsons Art Gallery from the U.S.
Bridge London

For London’s Frieze Week, the Chicago-based Bridge expands to London, completely taking over the 120-room Trafalgar Hotel in Trafalgar Square. More than 70 exhibitors are expected, including Art Vitam (Miami), Billy Shire (Culver City), Capla Kesting (New York) and Wada (Tokyo).
Frieze Art Fair

Frieze magazine publishers Matthew Slotover and Amanda Sharp present more than 150 top galleries in a custom-made tent erected in Regent’s Park in London. This year’s 'Frieze Projects' curatorial program is overseen by Neville Wakefield and includes commissioned works by Lara Favaretto, Elin Hansd?ttir, Janice Kerbel, Kris Martin, Gianni Motti and Richard Prince.
Zoo Art Fair

Setting up at a new location at the Royal Academy, the Zoo Art Fair continues to showcase galleries and arts organizations that have been in business for under six years. More than 50 exhibitors are expected at the fair, which awards a special art-on-paper acquisition award sponsored by the framer John Jones and a 'best artist' prize underwritten by Champagne Perrier-Jouet.
ArtVerona

ArtVerona, now in its third installment, returns to pavilions at the Verona Exhibition Grounds in the northern Italian city located midway between Milan and Venice. The fair features a special section devoted to Outsider Art.

The great Paris art fair, now in its 34th edition, presents 170 galleries (60 of them from Paris) in both the Grand Palais and the Cour Carr?e du Louvre. Founded in 2000, Art Toronto, a.k.a. the Toronto International Art Fair, takes place at the Toronto Convention Centre. Exhibitors are chosen by a panel composed of dealers Ren? Biennial of Young Artists from Europe and the Mediterranean

The 13th edition of this low-profile showcase of artists from the E.U. and Mediterranean countries has as theme 'Our Creative Diversity: Kairos,' and promises some 900 artists at a location in a participating country, to be announced.

The fifth installation of this Cologne-based fair, which takes place at the EXPO XXI building in the middle of the city, touts a new focus on contemporary art (signified by changing its name to 'art.fair 21' from the more general 'art.fair') and a more focused, 'hand-picked' approach to exhibitors.

Sanford L. Smith’s annual fair of modernist and contemporary art presents ca. 50 dealers at the Park Avenue Armory in Manhattan, including Bernarducci Meisel, Mark Borghi, Valerie Carberry, David Findlay Jr., James Graham, Nohra Haime, Francis Naumann, Gary Steinberg, Tasende, and others. The Nov. 8 preview gala benefits Planned Parenthood.

Now overseen by new director Andrea Bellini, Artissima 14 features 'Present Future,' an exhibition of emerging artists selected by a team of curators, and 'Constellations,' a collection of large, museum-level works. The venue is the Lingotto Fiere complex in Turin.
