김구림은 1950년대부터 다양한 매체, 장르, 주제를 넘나들며 예술의 최전선에서 독자적인 영역을 구축한 실험미술의 선구자이다. 비디오아트, 설치, 판화, 퍼포먼스, 회화 등 미술의 범주에서뿐만 아니라 무용, 연극, 영화, 음악에 이르기까지 다양한 분야에서 활발한 활동을 펼쳐왔다. 이번 전시에서는 한국 실험미술의 선구이자 총체 예술가로서 김구림의 미술사적 성과를 재확인하고, 새로운 담론과 연구를 지속 생성하는 현재진행형 작가로서 그의 행보를 살펴보고자 한다.

이번 전시에서는 서울관 6, 7전시실에 작가의 ‘현재’를 확인하고, 그가 품고 있는 문제의식을 엿볼 수 있는 신작 <음과 양: 자동차>, <음과 양>이 이번 전시에서 최초로 공개되며, 작가의 작품세계를 총망라하는 230여 점과 60여 점의 아카이브 자료가 전시된다. 또한 영화-무용-음악-연극으로 구성된 종합 공연으로 총체 예술가 김구림을 재조명한다.

Since the 1950s, Kim Kulim has established an independent territory on the artistic frontline, traversing across diverse media, genres, and themes as a pioneer of Experimental art. Rather than limit himself to the typical fine art mediums of installation, performance, and painting, Kim extends his creative practice to include other diverse fields such as dance, theatre, film, and music. This exhibition seeks to reconfirm Kim’s historical artistic achievements as a multimedia artist who spearheaded the concept of Experimental art in Korea, while also examining his presentprogressive status as an artist that continues to engender new discourses and research.

This exhibition takes place within MMCA Seoul’s Gallery 6 and 7, presenting some 230 works and 60 pieces of archival materials that offer a comprehensive look at the artist’s lifelong career as well as a large-scale performance that demonstrates his identity as a multimedia artist.
