노르웨이의 화가이자 판화가인 에드바르 뭉크(1863-1944)는 표현주의의 선구자이자 유럽 현대미술의 대표 주자이다. 예술의전당한가람미술관은 이번 전시를 통해 모더니즘에 없어서는 안 될, 파격적인 공헌을 한 뭉크의 작품을 조명한다. 아시아에서 가장 방대한 규모의 뭉크 회고전인 이번 전시에서는 <절규>와 같은 그의 상징적 모티프의 출현과 소멸, 그리고 재료를 기반으로 한 모더니티에 대한 그의 공헌을 중점적으로 다룬다. <절규>는 여전히 뭉크의 예술성을 상징하는 작품으로 남아 있지만, 이번 전시에서는 정통을 벗어난 그의 회화적 표현주의와 재료에 대한 급진적 실험에 초점을 맞추어 그의 작품 세계를 더 깊게 파고든다. 개념적 차원에서 작품을 담아내는 바탕체인 화판을 파격적으로 다루며 작품 제작 실패의 가능성을 안고 작업하면서 판화, 사진, 콜라주, 회화 등 예술 매체 간의 전통적인 경계를 넘나들었다. 본 회고전은 개인 소장품 및 오슬로 뭉크미술관의 희귀 걸작을 포함하여 뛰어난 회화, 드로잉, 판화 등의 작품을 주밀하게 담았다.
The Norwegian painter and graphic artist Edvard MUNCH(1863-1944) was a trailblazing pioneer of Expressionism and a leading exponent of European modern art. As the most extensive retrospective on Munch in Asia, it highlights the emergence and the disappearance of his iconic motifs, such as <The Scream>(1895), as well as his contributions to his material-based modernity. While The Scream remains an enduring symbol of MUNCH’ artistry, this exhibition delves deeper into his oeuvre, focusing on his unorthodox painterly expressionism and radical experiments with materials. On the conceptual level, his works include the possibility of failure, expressed not least in both his unconventional treatment of the support for painting, drawing, and printing and in exceeding the conventional borders between the artistic media such as printing, photography, collage, and painting. The retrospective meticulously combines outstanding paintings, drawings, and prints, including rare masterpieces from private collections and the MUNCH Museum in Oslo.
