솔올미술관은 《아그네스 마틴: 완벽의 순간들》을 개최한다. 아그네스 마틴(1912-2004)은 캐나다 출생의 미국 여성 미술가로 1950년대 이후 미국 미술을 대표하는 작가 중 한 사람이다. 마틴의 주요작품 54점이 소개되는 이번 전시는 리움미술관, 일본 오사카국립국제미술관과 나고야시미술관, 뉴욕 휘트니미술관과 디아파운데이션을 비롯하여 페이스갤러리, 조지 에코노무 컬렉션을 포함한 해외 소장자의 협력을 통해 이루어졌다. 또한 이번 전시는 테이트 모던 관장을 역임한 이화여대 초빙석좌교수 프란시스 모리스를 게스트 큐레이터로 초대하여 기획되었다.
《아그네스 마틴: 완벽의 순간들》은 순수 추상을 추구한 미국 작가 아그네스 마틴의 작업 세계를 조명하는 한국에서의 첫 미술관 전시이다. 아그네스 마틴은 컬럼비아대학 시절 선불교와 도교 사상을 접했고 이는 그의 작업에 많은 영향을 미쳤다. 이번 전시는 아그네스 마틴의 작업을 동양 사상의 관점에서 바라보는 자리가 될 것이다.
On May 4th, Sorol Art Museum will present its next exhibition, 《Agnes MARTIN: Moments of Perfection》. Agnes MARTIN(1912-2004), a Canadian-born American artist, stands as a prominent figure in American art since the 1950s. This exhibition, featuring 54 of MARTIN’s significant works, offers viewers a glimpse into the artist's journey of meditative painting culminating in perfection. The realization of this exhibition was made possible through collections of the esteemed international institutions such as the Leeum Museum of Art in Korea, the National Museum of Art in Osaka and the Nagoya City Art Museum in Japan, Whitney Museum of American Art and Dia Beacon in New York, as well as the Pace Gallery and the George Economou Collection.
《Agnes MARTIN: Moments of Perfection》 is the first exhibition in Korea of a North American artist whose pursuit of pure abstraction was informed by Zen Buddhism and Taoism that she engaged with from her student years. Her abstract works coincide with the development of monochrome painting – Dansaekhwa – in Korea, and audiences will, for the first time, be able to focus on MARTIN’s work from an Eastern perspective.
