《MMCA 기증작품전: 1960-1970년대 구상회화》는 최근 5년간 국립현대미술관에 기증된 작품 가운데 한국 화단의 형성과 성장에 자양분이 된 1960-70년대 구상회화를 재조명한다. 1960년대 이후 추상화가 한국 현대미술의 대세가 되면서 아카데믹한 그림은 구시대의 미술로 여겨지거나 별다른 주목을 받지 못했다. 그러나 추상회화의 연쇄적인 파상에 밀리면서도 구상회화의 영역에서 착실하게 독자적인 작품세계를 키워낸 소중한 작가들도 있었다. 시대가 변하고 새로운 조형개념이 출현하더라도 작가의 개성적인 시선으로 인물, 풍경, 사물, 사건 등을 충실히 묘사하는 표현양식은 한국 회화의 토양을 굳건히 다져왔다. 특히, 이번 전시에 출품되는 작가들은 자연에 관한 서정성과 사실적인 표현을 바탕으로 우리 전통속에서 발견되는 조형적 요소로 민족적 정서를 표출하고자 노력한 흔적을 찾아볼 수 있다. 또한 출품작들은 2021년 이건희컬렉션을 기점으로 늘어난 다수의 기증작품들로 구성되어 기증의 의미와 가치를 되새기는 역할도 기대된다.
Featuring artworks donated to MMCA over the past five years, 《MMCA Donated Collection: Figurative Paintings in Korea, 1960s–1970s》 sheds new light on the figurative paintings of the 1960s and 1970s. With abstract painting predominating the post-1960s Korean contemporary art scene, academic paintings were regarded as the art of an era past and received relatively little attention. Even amid the waves of abstract art, however, some artists made invaluable contributions through the consistent development of their own unique bodies of work in the figurative painting realm. Amidst changing times and the consistent emergence of novel formative arts concepts, they applied their unconventional perspectives to expressive styles that faithfully depicted people, landscapes and events to ultimately reinforce the foundations of Korean painting. Notably the artists’ lyrical and realistic representations of nature highlighted here reveal their attempts to represent national sentiments through formative art elements inspired by Korea’s traditions.
