Seock, Young-Ho is a well accomplished Korean artist whose work is motivated by a desire to explore the inner self. This interpersonal voyage starts from an element that is common to all natural life, soil. For as much as we know, all life originates from soil. The artist blends this natural element and colored pigments into a smooth mixture which he then applies on canvas to create dynamic geometric compositions. Working the elements into a fine mixture conceals their natural irregularity but only at first. A closer look reveals the beautifully complex roughness of the surface. Soil is an all-encompassing element, the essential birthplace of all that is nature and of all beings. Soil can sustain multiple cycles of life and death therefore ancient soil is rich with information of past times. Seok takes this element, composed of the same elements that define us, momentarily out of its natural setting. He incorporates it into his paintings where it becomes the ideal medium for a personal conversation through the language of life. This process allows the artist to transcend to a higher level of understanding of the self.
