바라캇 컨템포러리는 6월 12일부터 8월 11일까지 아랍에미리트와 뉴욕을 오가며 활동하는 파라 알 카시미 (Farah Al Qasimi)의 국내 첫 개인전 《블루 데저트 온라인(Blue Desert Online)》을 선보입니다. 이번 개인전은 문화적 혼종성을 다층적인 측면에서 관찰하는 그의 작업 중 최근 5년간 (2018-2023) 제작된 대표적인 사진 작품 19여점과 영상 작품들을 선보이며, 디지털화된 현재의 우리의 불안감과 현실, 도피와 환상 등을 다룹니다. 알 카시미는 사진, 비디오, 퍼포먼스 등의 다양한 프로젝트를 통해 걸프 아랍 국가의 탈식민주의 권력 구조, 성별, 취향에 대해 사회적 비평을 해왔습니다. 또한 사적인 공간과 공적인 공간을 유동적으로 넘나들며 장소, 순간, 사물에 내재된 무언의 사회적 규범과 가치를 탐구해 왔습니다. 

작가 소개 | 파라 알 카시미

파라 알 카시미 Farah Al Qasimi (b. 1991, UAE)는 뉴욕과 아랍에미리트를 기반으로 활동하고 있으며 예일 예술대학에서 미술과 음악을 전공하고 동대학에서 미술 석사 학위를 받았다. 그녀의 작품은 현재 뉴욕 현대 미술관을 포함한 뉴욕 솔로몬 R. 구겐하임 미술관, 아부다비 구겐하임, 런던의 테이트 모던, 퐁피두 센터, 두바이 자밀 아트 센터 등 세계 주요 다수 기관에 소장되어 있다. 최근 뉴욕 구겐하임, 런던 테이트 모던 전시를 비롯해서 런던 델피나 재단 (2023); 서호주 아트 갤러리 (2023); C/O 베를린(2023); 세인트루이스 현대미술관 (2021); MIT 리스트 비주얼 아트센터 (2019); 두바이 자밀 아트 센터(2019) 등에서 주최한 개인전과 광주 비엔날레 (2023); 샤르자 비엔날레 (2023); 이스탄불 페라 박물관 (2021); 파리 현대 아랍 사진 비엔날레 (2021); 요코하마 트리엔날레 (2020); 라호르 비엔날레 (2020); 토론토 현대 미술관 (2019); 바드 칼리지 헤셀 뮤지엄 (2017) 등의 단체전에 참여했다. 2020년 Public Art Fund는 뉴욕시 전역의 100개가 넘는 버스 정류장에서 그녀의 사진을 선보인 <Back and Forth Disco> 공공 프로젝트를 진행하였으며, 2021년 Capricious에서 출판된 그녀의 저서 Hello Future는 같은 해 애퍼처 재단 포토북 어워즈 (Aperture Foundation Photobook Prize) 최종 후보에 올랐다.

Blue Desert Online

June 12th - August 11th, 2024

Barakat Contemporary presents Blue Desert Online, the first Korean solo exhibition by the United Arab Emirates and New York-based photographer Farah Al Qasimi, from June 12 to August 11. In her work, Al Qasimi observes the multilayered aspects of cultural hybridity, with this exhibition featuring around 19 representative works of photography and video produced over the past five years (2018 to 2023). It focuses on the anxiety, reality, escapism, and illusion that we experience in our digitalized present. Through various projects in fields such as photography, video, and performance, Farah Al Qasimi has presented a social critique of postcolonial power structures, gender, and tastes in the Arab Gulf states. Moving fluidly between personal and public spaces, she has explored the unspoken social norms and values inherent in places, moments, and things.

 

About the Artist | Farah Al Qasimi

Based in New York and the United Arab Emirates, Farah Al Qasimi (b. 1991) has taken part in solo exhibitions organized by the Delfina Foundation (2023), Art Gallery of Western Australia (2023), C/O Berlin (2023), the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis (2021), and the MIT List Visual Arts Center (2019), along with international biennial events such as the Gwangju Biennale, Sharjah Biennial, Yokohama Triennale, Lahore Biennale, and Biennial of Contemporary Arab Photography, Paris. Her work has also been presented internationally through group exhibitions at the Guggenheim (New York), the Tate Modern (London), Pera Museum (Istanbul), the Bard College Hessel Museum of Art (Annandale-on-Hudson), and the Museum of Contemporary Art (Toronto). Her book Hello Future, published by Capricious in 2021, was shortlisted that same year for the Aperture Foundation Photobook Prize.

Al Qasimi’s work has been included in the collections of the Guggenheim (New York and Abu Dhabi), the Museum of Modern Art (New York), the Centre Pompidou, the Tate Modern, and the Jameel Arts Center (Dubai).
