전시 소개

팩션은 2024년 7월 9일부터 27일까지 미디어 아티스트 도예린의 인터렉티브 시뮬레이션 <탑승객님, 마스크를 착용해 주십시오>를 개최한다. 전시는 일회용 마스크 쓰레기가 대량 발생했던 코로나19 팬데믹 시기, 양심의 가책을 느낀 인물이 철저한 ‘인간 중심적 관점’으로 환경 보호를 실천하는 여정을 담는다. 플레이어는 마치 1980~90년대 어드벤처 게임 같은 세계에 접속해 ‘비행기 안에서 드론을 조종해 청정 지역에 두고 온 일회용 마스크를 회수하라’는 임무를 받는다. 한편 여객선은 자동차의 4배, 기차의 20배의 탄소를 배출하고, 여객선 안에서 환경 정화 미션을 수행하는 모순적인 풍경이 연출된다. 작가는 오늘날 기후 위기의 악화와 인공지능의 도래 등 새로이 맞닥뜨린 상황 앞에 어찌할 바 몰라 내실 없는 행동을 반복하는 인류의 모습을 블랙 코미디로 그려낸다.

작가 소개

도예린은 게임 엔진을 통해 일상에 판타지, SF를 결합한 사변적 세계를 구현하고 스토리텔링한다. 대표작 <아세아 2023>은 2023년 철거된 아세아전자상가가 VR 동굴이 되었다는 배경으로 연대기를 펼친다. 작품은 아르스일렉트로니카(2023), 국립아시아문화전당 <ACT 페스티벌>(2023)에서 전시했다.

About the Exhibition

Faction is pleased to present Yerin Doh's interactive simulation entitled All Passengers Please Wear Face Masks, running from July 9th to 27th, 2024. The exhibition portrays an individual’s journey during the COVID-19 pandemic, a time when the production of disposable mask waste became a significant issue. The protagonist, feeling a sense of guilt, practices environmental protection, but through the narrow lens of a strictly human-centered perspective.

In the exhibition, players assume the role of a protagonist in a 1980s-90s adventure game storyline, tasked with an important mission: 'Deploy the drone from the aircraft to retrieve disposable masks left in the clean zone.' An ironic scenario unfolds as an environmental cleanup operation takes place on a passenger ship, known to emit four times more carbon than cars and twenty times more than trains. The artist satirically depicts humanity’s futile efforts in the face of the escalating climate crisis and the rise of artificial intelligence, highlighting our inability to effectively address these growing challenges.

About the Artist

Yerin Doh uses game engines to blend fantasy and science fiction with everyday life, creating speculative worlds and compelling narratives. The artist’s acclaimed work, 'ASEA 2023,' imagines the ASEA Electronics Mall, demolished in 2023, as transformed into a VR cave, unfolding a rich chronicle. This piece has been featured in prestigious exhibitions such as Ars Electronica (2023) and the National Asia Culture Center ACT Festival 2023.
