Blight and Hope: Poverty Seen Through the Lens외교통상부는 한국국제교류재단과 함께 “글로벌이슈”를 주제로 한 문화외교 사업을 실시하며 금번 사진전은 이의 일환이다. 이를 통해 빈곤과 같이 세계 인류 전체가 당면한 공동의 문제에 대한 관심과 책임의식을 문화와 예술로 표명하고자 한다.
This exhibition is part of the 'Culture and Global Issues Project', launched by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade in collaboration with the Korea Foundation. The project aims to express, by cultural and artistic means, interest in and commitment to global issues such as poverty.
멀지 않은 과거에, 대한민국은 세계 최빈국 수준이었다. 굶주림과 가난의 기억은 아직도 생생하게 남아있다. 때문에 대한민국에 있어 빈곤이라는 주제는 특별한 의미가 있다. 많은 한국인들은 이에 대한 생각과 경험을 나누고자 하는 의무감을 느낀다.
Not long ago, the Republic of Korea was among the poorest countries. Memories of famine and poverty are still recent and raw.
Therefore, the theme of poverty has a special meaning for Korea. Many Koreans feel a sense of duty to share their thoughts and experience about it.
이 전시는 사진이라는 강력한 매체를 통해 빈곤문제에 대한 인식을 제고하고자 한다. 빈곤이 초래하는 파괴적 효과들, 그리고 문제 해결을 위한 해법에 대해 작업해 온 국내외 저명 사진가 16명이 참여하였다.
Using the powerful medium of photography, this exhibition aims to shed further light and open more eyes to poverty issues. Sixteen prominent photographers, who have worked on the devastating effects of poverty and possible solutions to it, contributed to this exhibition.
빈곤은 목숨과 생존, 안보, 공동체, 문화와 전통, 인간의 존엄성을 위협한다. 전쟁, 환경재난, 질병 등 인류가 직면한 모든 재앙과 밀접한 관련을 맺고 있다. 이처럼 복잡다기한 측면을 지닌 빈곤 문제의 해법은 의외로 단순할 수 있다. 그것은 나눔, 특히 존중에 기반한 나눔이다.
Poverty threatens lives and livelihood, security, communities, culture and tradition, and human dignity. It is closely linked to war, environmental disasters, diseases, and every other scourge faced by humankind. Complicated aspects surrounding poverty notwithstanding, the solution is simple. It involves sharing, especially sharing based on respect.
이 전시는 국내 전시 이후 런던 등을 거쳐 여러 장소를 순회할 예정이다. 글로벌 이슈와 예술을 접목시켜 세계 빈곤문제에 대한 고민의 장을 제공하는 한편, 희망과 용기를 전파하는 계기가 되기를 희망한다.
The exhibition will travel to London and other places. By marrying global issues and art, it is hoped that this exhibition will prompt further thoughts on global poverty, while at the same time spreading hope and courage for tackling it.
